HYPOSPADIAS

Hypospadias is a male birth defect of the urethra-the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the outside of the body… The opening of the urethra is located beneath the penis instead of the tip of the head of the penis. A penis does not appear normal nor does work like a normal penis.

CLINICAL FEATURES AND SYMPTOMS OF HYPOSPADIAS ARE :

  • Unusual urinary opening
  • Urine falls down like a fountain while urinating
  • Downward curvature of the penis -a condition called chordee
  • Hooded foreskin

DIAGNOSIS

Hypospadias is generally diagnosed or noticed at the time of birth.

TREATMENT

Hypospadias is completely treatable. However, it is completely treated in stages depending upon the severity of the condition and associated complications.

Hypospadias is treated by surgical intervention and necessarily needed to be operated. Ideally, the surgery is often performed during the first year of a boy’s life for a better clinical outcome.

The objective of the hypospadias repair is to:

  • Correct the downward curvature,
  • Reconstruct the urethra so that the urethra is of adequate size and with the opening at the usual place i.e, at the tip of the penis,
  • Provide a normal cosmetic appearance of the penis.

The Reconstructive Urologistdepending on the case makes the choice of surgical technique. Usually, the Paediatricians refer most boys born with hypospadias to their local Pediatric Urologist or reconstructive urologist for treatment.

We at medical treatment centre, India are associated with a few renowned and skilled urologists of North India who are expert in Hypospadias surgery.

RISKS OR COMPLICATIONS AFTER HYPOSPADIAS SURGERY

A patient may have to face a few complications after hypospadias including:

  • a breakdown of the repair,
  • urethral stricture disease,
  • Improper or incomplete correction of downward curvature,
  • fistulas – a condition where the abnormal holes connecting the urethra and skin causing urine to excrete at the site of the fistula in addition to the urethral opening.
  • Tethering of the penis can occur due to penile skin deficiency in cases where multiple surgeries are performed using additional penile skin.

We recommend consulting the best Urologist in Delhi for better clinical outcome and minimal complications.

HYPOSPADIAS IF LEFT UNTREATED

Risks are much more if hypospadias is not treated. A boy with hypospadias goes into slight depression with growing age as his masculinity is affected. He finds himself different from other boys as he urinates like a fountain. Later in adulthood, his sexual life may get affected if he lives with hypospadias.
