WHAT IS INTRAUTERINE INSEMINATION (IUI)?

Intra-Uterine Insemination (IUI) is a fertility treatment in which low dose medication is given to allow one or two follicles to develop. It involves placing sperm inside a woman’s uterus to facilitate fertilization at the time of ovulation.

The goal of IUI is to extend the quantity of sperm that reaches the fallopian tubes and later increase the possibility of fertilization.

IUI provides the sperm a plus by giving it an advantage, however still needs a sperm to succeed in and fertilize the egg on its own. It is a less invasive and economical choice compared to in vitro fertilization. The period of the total method is brief and it is entirely painless.

WHEN IS IUI USED?

IUI could be suggested for couples making an attempt to conceive for a minimum of one year with no success. The most common reasons for IUI is low or poor sperm count.

However, IUI may be selected as a fertility treatment for any of the following conditions as well:

  •   Cervical mucus problems
  • Cervical connective tissue from past procedures which can hinder the sperm’s ability to enter the female internal reproductive organ i.e, Uterus
  • Unexplained infertility
  • Mild Decreased sperm motility
  • Mild endometriosis
  • Low sperm count
  • A requirement of donor sperm
  • Ejaculation and Erection dysfunction
  • Ovulation problems

IUI is not recommended for the following patients:

  • Females who suffer a severe disease of the fallopian tubes
  • Females with a history of pelvic inflammatory disease or pelvic infections
  • Females with moderate to severe endometriosis

IUI PROCESS / HOW DOES IUI WORK?

Step 1 Initial Consultation

Both the male and feminine partners undergo a preliminary checkup and tests for a diagnosis.

They also meet with an embryologist. The semen of the male partner is tested and analyzed for different parameters, including the quality, quantity, and movement of sperm.

Step 2 Monitoring of Follicles

Before intrauterine insemination, the female partner is given a few doses of ovulation-stimulating medicine.

Thereafter, the fertility specialist with the help of ultrasound monitors the development of the follicles within the ovary.

Based on the development of the follicles, the woman is administered with human chorionic gonadotrophin injection (HCG) for ovulation.

The IUI procedure is also performed even during a natural cycle but fertility doctors in Delhi, India might provide medications to enhance the growth of follicles.

The aim is to allow one to two follicles to grow whose size is monitored using an Ultrasound.

Step 3 Provide Sperm

Then a sample of sperm is taken from the Male partner which is then processed and also the healthiest among them are hand-picked.

The embryologist in the laboratory washes the semen sample to separate semen from the seminal fluid.

Then the sperm is directly implanted into the female internal reproductive organ or Uterus using a catheter.

This method maximizes the number of sperm cells that are placed within the female uterus, thus increasing the possibility of conception.

Step 4 Insemination Procedure

Intra Uterine Insemination (IUI) is a simple process.

Processed sperm beside the alimentary media is injected within the female internal reproductive organ, which reduces the distance the sperm have to travel.

The procedure can be repeated for consecutive days to increase the chances of success.

Step 5 After Procedure

Once the insemination procedure completes, the fertility specialist in Delhi or reproductive medicine doctor in Delhi may recommend as per her wisdom, medicines to enhance the chances of pregnancy.

The specialist additionally provides the required amount of your time throughout that physiological state tests are conducted to work out if the feminine partner is pregnant.

The IUI procedure takes solely some minutes and involves minimal discomfort.

The next step is to confirm the pregnancy after two weeks of the procedure.

HOW SUCCESSFUL IS IUI?

The average success rate for IUI varies from 10 percent up to 20 percent in one cycle.

For Women, over 35 years of age the success rate declines.
The success of IUI depends on several factors.

If the IUI procedure is performed each month, success rates may reach as high as 20% per cycle depending on certain factors like female age, the reason for infertility and whether or not fertility medicine was used, etc.
