PUJ Obstruction

PUJ OBSTRUCTION (Pelvic Ureteric Junction Obstruction) or UPJ OBSTRUCTION (Ureteropelvic Junction obstruction)

Our urinary system is designed in a manner where urine flows from kidney to ureter then reaches to bladder. When some blockage exists between Kidney and the Ureter, that condition is termed as Ureteropelvic junction obstruction. UPJ obstruction is a congenital problem which means often it occurs at the time of birth only (Urinary problem in children).

This blockage slows down the flow of urine or in some cases block the urine flow out of the kidney.

In some cases blockage is small which do not cause damage to child’s kidney. But in cases where the blockage or UPJ/PUJ obstruction in children is large then in such severe cases, the kidney is unable to drain the urine completely. Urine gets collected in the kidney leading to swelling of the kidney called hydronephrosis and can cause permanent kidney damage.

PUJ OBSTRUCTION SYMPTOMS:

In mild cases of PUJ obstruction, it goes on its own with the advancement of age but still, it is advised to consult the Top Urologist in Delhi when diagnosed.

In severe cases following are the symptoms :

• Fever
• Vomiting
• Blood in urine
• No urine output
• Pain in the abdomen
• Palpable Abdominal mass

DIAGNOSIS

• Urine analysis and Blood tests to measure the content of Blood Urea Nitrogen and creatinine in the child’s urine.
• CT scans
• Renal / Kidney Ultrasound

TREATMENT FOR PUJ OBSTRUCTION

Treatment is defined by the Urologist after evaluating the patient’s investigations and history.

In some cases, as such, no treatment is required but a regular follow up is necessarily required to keep a check on the obstruction.

In severe cases where the obstruction is large enough to damage the kidney then surgical intervention is required (Pyeloplasty in children).
